Church lighting

At Basis, we are often asked to create lighting schemes and supply lights for churches and ecclesiastical spaces. This may range from individual chapels and small parishes to grand cathedrals. Across all church environments, it is fundamental that light levels are accurately calculated. We use a combination of Dialux and Relux software to do this. The light levels needed will depend upon the level of natural light the space receives and the colour of the surrounding walls; if light levels are low or the walls are dark, the Lux will need to be higher. It is important to get these levels right so that enough light reaches the nave to be directed onto hymn books and towards the sanctuary, the priest, cross, pulpit and lectern during service. Most commonly this is between 150-300 lux.

Ronald Phillips

We were approached by a client who was pitching for a prestigious project in Mayfair. They needed small but powerful lights to be used in a window display and we were up against stiff competition with the designer asking many international lighting manufacturers to present their most minimal luminaire. After discussing the brief with our client we agreed to move forward with a design based around the Soraa 10 MR16 with the Snap magnetic beam lens system as this would give maximum flexibility whilst remaining inconspicuous.

World Rugby Museum

We were asked by FusionLX to assist in the lighting scheme for the new World Rugby museum at Twickenham Stadium. The stadium has exhibited memorabilia since 1979 but this was to be a new and prestigious museum of sport in the home of rugby. As with all of our museum lighting projects, we were keen to use our lights to show all exhibits at their very best. This would include illuminating 15,000 pieces of archival material, 9,000 photographs and rare artifacts such as the world’s oldest international rugby football jersey and the iconic Calcutta Cup.

Dinny Hall

We have created retail lighting for British jewellery designer Dinny Hall since 2012, when we were asked to light her Islington store. Our projects have since grown in scale; we created lighting schemes for her Notting Hill store in 2014 and Covent Garden in 2017. Our most recent project was at Marylebone Lane. To design a lighting scheme for her Marylebone store, we collaborated with Dinny Hall herself and interior designer Tessa Wilson. One of the interior features they selected for the fit-out was a collection of antique display units. We were asked to light these display cases from above using downlights.

Nike Lighting Workshop

At Basis Lighting, we often discuss quality and temperature of light. This is a vital consideration in many environments but can have a dramatic effect in retail lighting. We were contacted by Nike to prepare a lighting presentation and workshop for their UK visual merchandising teams. They wanted us to demonstrate how light could be used to achieve maximum impact on their displays by using the highest quality of light in the best arrangement. Nike already knew how to attract attention with their branding and merchandising, but we wanted to illustrate how excellent retail lighting could considerably enhance displays and make their products truly shine.

Watts Gallery

We worked with the Watts Gallery over the course of a year upgrading the lighting across the interior spaces; the main galleries, temporary exhibition areas and the Chapel. The galleries’ lighting had relied on a scheme consisting entirely of halogen lamps. We were called in to advise whether we could match or improve the lighting using low energy sources whilst maintaining light levels and ensuring the safest environment for artworks.

Manchester Cathedral

We were asked by Light Perceptions Ltd on behalf of Manchester Cathedral to provide lighting for their major redevelopment project. Our lighting would be integral to the reshaping of the space within a larger church lighting scheme designed by Light Perceptions Ltd. As with most ecclesiastical environments, colour temperature and light quality were key considerations for our church lighting proposal.

Tracey Neuls

We were approached by award winning shoe designer Tracey Neuls to create a retail lighting scheme for her new store in London’s Coal Drops Yard. Tracey’s shoes are innovative and beautifully made and we wanted to provide lighting that would reflect the individuality of her designs.

Gairloch Heritage Museum

We love lighting unusual spaces, so when we were approached by museum designers Campbell & Co to work with them on the Gairloch Heritage Museum’s new home in a renovated 1950s Anti-Aircraft Operations room, we were intrigued. The new museum would display a unique collection of artefacts of local significance, such as the huge lens from the Rubh Re lighthouse and the Poolewe Hoard of Bronze Age objects.
